The clinic has good specialists and modern technologies to deal with any types of spinal pain or injuries. We found that clinic because they had the IDD therapy, which is more safe and effective treatment for spinal disc issues. We were appointed to a great doctor Akin Celik that combines professionalism with a genuine warmth and friendliness that allows you to feel calm, reassured and in good hands throughout the appointment. Most importantly, of course, he really knows what he is doing and has experience with advanced spine problems. This is a really reliable place to go to if you have any type of back pain. I sincerely recommend this place.

Akin and Rob were fantastic with me. I tore a disc in my L4 / L5 vertebrae doing weights back in August. I went to them a complete wreck both emotionally and physically. After 20 odd sessions of IDD and intermittent tecar and I have made a full recovery. Akin was there every step of the way to support me and ease any concerns I had along the way. I’m now back out running and doing all the things I used to do with no pain whatsoever. I will be forever grateful to them.

Our Background
Founded by osteopath Robert Shanks, our clinic was the first clinic in Chigwell to offer Osteopathy. Robert began the clinic in year 2000, having been influenced by his mother’s long career as eminent physiotherapist. Whilst Robert went on to establish several other Osteopathy clinics including in London’s prestigious Harley Street district, by virtue of the fact he went to school and grew up in Chigwell he remains particularly passionate and committed to helping the local community in Chigwell and beyond. .

Does my first appointment include treatment?
Yes absolutely! We want to get you back to optimum health as soon as possible. Our standard 60 min New Patient appointment includes assessment AND treatment. We can offer a 30 minute appointment for New Patients but in most cases a 30 minute appointment won’t allow enough time to include (much) treatment after having usually spent at least 20 minutes taking a thorough case history and performing a comprehensive clinical assessment (such as testing reflexes, testing muscles and joints). The case history and assessment are important parts of the process in order to confirm an accurate (provisional) diagnosis and to establish the optimum and most cost effective treatment options and treatment plan. A 60 minute New Patient appointment is effectively a 30 minute initial appointment and a 30 minute follow up appointment back to back that costs less that booking two 30 minute appointments booked apart from each other, hence why we encourage all new patients to book in for 60 minutes.

As company director and co-founder Robert is part of the driving force behind our multidisciplinary approach. Robert has been strongly influenced by his mother, a chartered physiotherapist with 40 years’ experience. Robert graduated as an Osteopath in 2000 and subsequently furthered his education with several postgraduate courses, notably in medical acupuncture, electrotherapy and clinical Pilates (the latter with the renowned Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute). As well as treating sports injuries and tension headaches, Robert’s other main area of special interest is the management of patients with chronic low back pain and neck pain associated with disc problems.
AKIN CELIK - Osteopath, Medical Acupuncturist, Pilates Instructor
Akin originates from Turkey and in 2018 graduated from the University College of Osteopathy with a Masters in Osteopathy. From a young age, he knew he wanted to be an osteopath having been treated by one following several injuries after a horse riding incident.
Additionally, he has many years experience in sports massage, medical acupuncture/dry needling, Kinesio and active taping which he can use to enhance his osteopathic treatments. Akin always aims to provide therapy with both enthusiasm and professionalism in an effort to encourage wellness in all his patients.
Matthew Irvine - Osteopath
Matthew is a highly skilled Osteopath who uses his attention to detail to help with each and every one of his patients who come to see him here at spine plus. Matthew is very passionate about his approach to Osteopathy and how it can help all patients with their symptoms. Matthew’s passion and drive to promote Osteopathy was highlighted when he was selected to be joined by a few other elite students to study and train in Melbourne’s prestigious Victoria university. It was here in Melbourne that Matthew first learnt about the wonders of how shockwave therapy , acupuncture, dry cupping, intervertebral disc distraction (IDD) and ultrasound therapy could help him with his patients presenting symptoms.

Ben is one of our most senior osteopaths, having worked at our Chigwell clinic for over 7 years. Ben is recognised by all (major) medical insurance companies including BUPA. Having supplemented his osteopathic training with post graduate courses in medical acupuncture and electrotherapy, Ben is able to offer treatment for a wide range of conditions using a combination of various approaches.
